The Ivy welcomes Ana Finel Honigman to discuss her new book Cult Artists. She will be in conversation with BmoreArt Editor and Publisher Cara Ober. What makes a cult artist? Whether pioneering in their craft, fiercely and undeniably unique, or critically divisive, cult artists come in all shapes and guises. Cult Artists handpicks 50 notable figures in the modern art world and explores the creative genius that earned them the ‘cult’ label, while celebrating the works that made their names.
CULT ARTISTS handpicks 50 notable figures in the modern art world and explores the creative genius that earned them the ‘cult’ label, while celebrating the works that made their names. From the iconic Salvador Dalí and Frida Kahlo, to radical activists such as the Guerrilla Girls and Ana Mendieta. The artistic mediums explored are similarly varied, with sculptors, performance, graffiti and fine artists alike. From little knowns with small, devout followings, to superstars gracing the covers of magazines, each is special in their individuality and their ability to inspire, antagonise and delight.
Ana Finel Honigman is a New York-born art and fashion writer with a Doctorate degree in the History of Art from Oxford University. She lives in Berlin and Baltimore. Alongside her academic work, Ana has written about contemporary art and fashion for magazines including AnOther Magazine, ArtNews, Artforum, British Vogue, Dazed & Confused, Frieze, Guardian Unlimited, Paper, New York Times and Wall Street Journal.
Nora Sturges: Levitation | Opening Reception

C. Grimaldis Gallery is pleased to present Levitation, an exhibition of recent small-scale paintings by Baltimore-based artist Nora Sturges.Working in oil paint, gouache, and egg tempera, Sturges surpasses reality to enter a world of abstracted landscapes of color and form.Levitation is her second solo exhibition at C. Grimaldis Gallery.
Sturges’ recent works are inspired by the mystery and humanity of late medieval Italian frescoes.Her paintings merge a mystifying spatial context with solid forms to create a pathway into abstraction.Sturges builds her own worlds riddled with beautiful imperfections and clarity through layers of paint.By combining the holy and the earthly, the medieval and the present day, she attempts to understand and build upon this history from a post-abstraction viewing context.
By showcasing paintings no larger than 10 inches wide, Levitation, highlights Sturges’ ability to generate an intimacy with the viewer.Her approach to abstraction provides hints to a world that is foreign at first glance, but becomes more structured as you move from piece to piece.It is this disjointed familiarity unified by color that brings these small works to life.
Sturges has received numerous awards and recognitions, including four Individual Artist Awards from the Maryland State Arts Council and four publications in New American Paintings. She was granted the Juror’s Award from the McLean Project for the Arts in 2011, and was named Best in Show from the Bethesda Painting Awards in 2010.Sturges has held recent solo exhibitions at David Lusk Gallery (Nashville, TN), Mount St. Mary’s University (Emmitsburg, MD), Stevenson University (Stevenson, MD), and Bachelier Cardonsky Gallery (Kent, CT).Sturges is currently a Professor of Painting and Drawing at Towson University (Towson, MD).
Levitation will be on view from September 26 through November 2. An opening reception will take place on Thursday, September 26 from 6 to 8pm.
Jackie Milad: Chaos Comes and Goes | Opening Reception

C. Grimaldis Gallery is pleased to present Chaos Comes and Goes, a solo exhibition of works by Baltimore-based artist, Jackie Milad.As an investigation of the idea of the archive, this exhibition showcases pieces that have been reborn using collage elements from previous works.Milad aims to question preciousness and practice experimentation, while also highlighting themes of history and culture.
Chaos Comes and Goes draws focus to time and movement, showcasing how artwork can become part of a regenerative process, keeping the work from becoming static.Thinking about the similarities between this notion and the reality of historical symbolism, we can begin to understand Milad’s resistance to permanence. She presents the viewer with truths, that even the pyramids, which we think of as ever lasting, will crumble one day.
Within her collages, Milad gives us hints of her identity as an Egyptian-Honduran-American through pictorial elements and deconstructed language. She utilizes color and texture, freeing herself up to be responsive and reactive during her process.This breakdown of symbols and collapse of ideas references her experience in the world and allows the viewer to draw multiple meanings from small details in each piece.
Milad has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally.Recent select exhibitions include Grizzly Grizzly (Philadelphia, PA), School 33 Art Center (Baltimore, MD), Phoebe Projects (Baltimore, MD), Museo de Arte de Mazatlan (Mazatlan, Mexico), Transmitter (Brooklyn, NY), and Goucher College (Baltimore, MD).Milad has been awarded three Individual Artist Grants from the Maryland State Arts Council and is a 2019 Sondheim Finalist, recently exhibiting her work at the Walters Art Museum (Baltimore, MD).Along with her active studio practice she has also held a long-standing career as a curator and educator supporting emerging artists.Milad is currently an Assistant Director for the Joseph Meyerhoff Center of Career Development and an Adjunct Professor in the Curatorial Practice MFA Program at the Maryland Institute College of Art.
Chaos Comes and Goes will be on view from September 26 through November 2. An opening reception will take place on Thursday, September 26 from 6 to 8pm.

Generations: A History of Black Abstract Art celebrates the significant contributions black artists have made in the development of abstraction.
