"Father Son" May Pang

The Lost Weekend – The Photography of May Pang
Friday, July 26 | Ongoing through July 28
@ Winkel Gallery

Few people knew John Lennon as intimately as May Pang.  Pang was Lennon’s lover during the infamous “Lost Weekend” which lasted 18 months during late 1973 through 1975.  During this highly creative time for Lennon, Pang took candid photos of Lennon in a comfortable, relaxed environment.  A collection of these private photographs will be on display and available for the Winkel Gallery, 1715 Aliceanna Street, Baltimore, MD., on Friday, July 26 through Sunday, July 28.  Admission to the exhibit is free to the public. All works are available to purchase – See John Lennon as May saw him!

May Pang will be in attendance at Winkel Gallery, meeting customers and telling stories behind these amazing limited-edition photographs for sale of John Lennon.

During the Lost Weekend, with May’s help, Lennon had his most artistically and commercially productive period post-Beatles—with the albums “Mind Games”, “Walls and Bridges”, which included his only #1 Hit Single “Whatever Gets You Through the Night”, “Rock and Roll” and collaboration with Rock legends Elton John, David Bowie, Harry Nilsson, Mick Jagger, and Ringo among others. Also, on that album Pang can be heard on the song “#9 Dream” where she whispers John’s name in the song.  Another song on the album “Surprise, Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox)” was written about Pang.

Pang also encouraged Lennon to reconnect with his family and his friends, which ultimately led to a reunion with Paul McCartney and a memorable jam session between the two Beatles.  Pang also arranged for Julian Lennon to visit his father for the first time in almost three years.  One of Pang’s photographs of Julian Lennon graces the cover of Julian’s latest album entitled “Jude.”

Lennon also went into the studio with friend Harry Nilsson during this time and produced his album “Pussy Cats.”  It was during this time that Pang rented a house in Santa Monica and moved in with Lennon and fellow partiers Ringo Starr, Keith Moon (The Who) and Harry Nilsson.  Several photos from this time also appear in the exhibition.  Other highlights of the exhibition include the only photograph that exists of John Lennon signing the contract to dissolve the Beatles as well as one of the last known photographs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney together from March 29, 1974.  Both photographs have never been available to the public until now.

Pang has also published three books on her times with Lennon including Loving John, John Lennon – The Lost Weekend and Instamatic Karma featuring photos from her private archives.

“The Lost Weekend – The Photography of May Pang” coincides with the recent digital release of the feature film documentary “The Lost Weekend : A Love Story,” produced by Briarcliff Entertainment. Watch the film’s trailer here: https://thelostweekendmovie.com/trailer/           (Available on Amazon Prime, AppleTV, YouTube. Xfinity, Verizon and Vudu).

“The Lost Weekend – The Photography of May Pang” exhibition will provide fans a rare opportunity to see John Lennon in a new light, through the lens of someone who knew him intimately during one of the most creative periods of his life.  Pang’s photos will be on display and available to purchase for three days only.  Check out the show and meet May Pang at the Winkel Gallery, 1715 Aliceanna Street, Baltimore, MD, Friday, July 26 through Sunday, July 28, 2024.

3:30 PM: All That Jazz (1979) [R] (125 min)
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 87%/85%

Fosse!!! Did Kubrick really confess: “this is the best movie I’ve ever seen”? The flawed, mesmerizing Roy Schieder (as ersatz Fosse), is the director-choreographer on a tragic tear, tumbling toward opening night. The “dazzling, frenetic, and ultimately poignant examination of the life of a brilliant yet tortured artist” (New York Times) is just half the action here; Fosse’s meticulous, angular precision and provocative sensuality are on full display in the film that set a new standard for the genre.

6:00 PM: Strictly Ballroom (1992) [PG] (96 min)
Rotten Tomatoes: 88%/87%

The classic ballroom experience on film, Baz Luhrman’s “exuberant and sheerly romantic comedy…in its mixture of camp and reality…is irresistible”. (San Francisco Chronicle). The wonderfully zany, high-energy world of competitive ballroom dancing is turned on its head when rebel Scott Hastings dares to break from the stifling rigidity of traditional steps, landing him in hot water with the powers that be. That is ’til he finds Fran, the clumsy newbie who, as it turns out, is also a maverick. Scott and Fran’s sizzling chemistry ignites both on and off the dance floor, amidst sequins, spray tans, and a cast of delightfully over-the-top characters – culminating in a spectacular showdown of glitz, glam, heart and soul.

8:00 PM Lindy Hop Class and Open Social Dance at Mobtown Ballroom (60 min)
The stage is set, the lights are on and the drinks are ready just over North Ave. at Mobtown Ballroom, where newcomers and pros alike come together on the floor for the always hot Friday night Swing and Lindy Hop scene. Mobtown has got a big special in store for the Parkway fam: a drop-in beginner lesson (no partner or experience required), followed by an open social dance. Go on, and get out there!

8:00 PM Alive and Kicking (2016) [NR] (135 min)
Rotten Tomatoes: 100% / 94%

Or, stick with Parkway, grab a drink, and settle in for the uplifting doc that traces swing from Harlem’s Savoy to Mobtown’s Lindy Hop – and lays out how, why and where swing builds community and even personal healing and transformation. “With its acrobatic zest, swing dancing was a perfect expression of defiant resilience during the Great Depression. For contemporary enthusiasts, it’s an antidote to the emotional disconnect of the so-called connected age. Swing buff Susan Glatzer…makes these points in her first documentary… [and] lets the dancers’ ecstatic moves do most of the talking…” (Los Angeles Times).

2:00 PM (105 minutes): Mad Hot Ballroom (2005) [PG]
Rotten Tomatoes: 84%/83%

Ok kids! Ok parents and grown-ups and young at heart! You’re up – this afternoon’s just for you – a film and a dance lesson and free popcorn for all. This heartwarming doc follows NYC public school students on their journey through rumba, tango, swing, merengue and fox trot – from “ick, no!” to the unfolding of self-confidence, discipline, and teamwork on the floor of the Grand Finals and the World Financial Center. This uplifting chronicle of growth and dedication “doesn’t condescend to its interviewees (students or teachers) or treat them as adorable objects…Instead, the film offers its subjects as individuals with goals and ideas, confusions and aspirations…And dancing is but one means…to help them figure out their lives.” (Pop Matters).
Watch the trailer.

4:00 – 5:00 PM: Family Lindy Hop and Partnering Class in the Parkway Lobby
As you spill out into the theatre after Mad Hot Ballroom, you’re gonna want to move! Why not stay for a fun, expressive, all-ages dance class led by Mobtown’s expert instructors? Bring the whole family!

7:00 PM (90 minutes): Screening: Nosferatu (1922) [NR]
As the sun sets and shadows grow, we take a cue from our friends at Mobtown and dare you to enter the sinister realm of “Nosferatu”, the film that redefined horror cinema! “A visual and emotional treat.” In this tale of relentless suspense and haunting beauty, “Max Schreck is unforgettable as the rat-faced, needle-fingered human stick insect who emerges from his battered castle to spread plague through the land.” (Empire) F.W. Murnau’s shadowy, atmospheric direction and pioneering special effects set a new standard for the genre. Rediscover the chilling classic that turned fear into art and experience the timeless struggle between good and evil.
Watch the trailer.

8:30 PM (60min): Costume Contest at Parkway
Did you come dressed to kill? Perfect! Catwalkers and onlookers alike are welcome in a best costume contest, with prizes sponsored by Parkway, Mobtown, and Lyric Theatre (did someone say tickets to The Sisters of Mercy?).

9:30 PM – Onwards: Goth Prom at Mobtown Ballroom
Let the eerie vibes of Nosferatu carry you as you slip into the night to join a party like no other, hosted by our friends at Mobtown Ballroom. Revel in an evening of DJ sets, tantalizing drinks, and live music by the industrial goth band Vosh. Break out that formal black you’ve been waiting to wear and join the creatures of the night for a fang-tastic night of film, dance, and music!

ARTINA 2024: A Point of View
deadline August 4
posted by Washington Sculptors Group & Sandy Spring Museum

The phrase ‘a point of view’ can have multiple meanings. It can be defined as a position or perspective from which physical objects, mental concepts, issues, etc are considered or evaluated. It can also be used to refer to one’s opinion or perspective on things, their personal view of the world. In art, perspective is the process of translating the 3-dimensional world onto a 2-dimensional canvas. It is the skill of using line, mathematics, color, and any number of techniques to trick the eye into seeing through a plane into another world. In modern parlance, the initialization POV has become ubiquitous, whether in the world of gaming or social media, to reference scenes and videos from the perspective of the person looking out at the world. Borrowing this language, this exhibition asks artists to ponder the nature of perspective. Each of us has a unique lens through which we view, navigate, and react to the world. While we can never fully inhabit another’s viewpoint, as artists, we have the power to offer glimpses of our own ways of seeing the world, made manifest through our work and the discourse around it.

Artists are invited to explore POV as a concept or technique for sculpting illusion, presenting your view of reality, commenting on the fallibility of perception, offering multiple viewpoints of a concept, providing a historical perspective on a topic of choice, or any other way that best presents your point of view.

— Nehemiah Dixon, III

Artists are invited to submit existing or new sculptures, and site-specific installations that fit the theme. You are welcome to take the theme and explore any metaphors in nature, society, politics, etc. Go wild! But provide a point of reference for your viewer/participant. Artists are especially encouraged to engage with the museum’s history and current mission in any way they see fit, including through the digitized collection available here. All mediums are welcome, but all works must be suitable for outdoors with little to no maintenance.

Brown Sugar Bake-off Submission
deadline August 12
posted by Two Strikes Theatre Collective’s (TSTC)

Thank you for submitting to the Brown Sugar Bake-off Festival produced by Two Strikes Theatre Collective and The Strand Theater!

Inspired by Paula Vogel’s Bake-Offs, the Two Strikes Theatre Brown Sugar Bake-Off is a celebration of the unique and universal stories Black women and non-binary creatives have to tell. In our third year, the Brown Sugar Bake-Off will focus on a new theme: Mental Health. This year’s focus is on what it means to reclaim our wellness in the face of emotional labor and generational trauma.

THE RECIPE (aka the rules)

Playwrights must identify as Black women or non-binary.

Play submissions should be made via Google Form (insert link) as a Microsoft Word or PDF file and will then be reviewed by a panel of readers.

All plays must be blind submissions, which means that the playwright’s name and any identifying information must be removed from the manuscript in its entirety. This includes the title page, and all headers and footers throughout the text of the play.

Playwrights’ names will be associated with their application submitted with their manuscript via Google Forms.

For BSBO, a ten-minute play is ten (10) pages or fewer (in 12 point typeface, not including character information or title page). Please note that the maximum limit is ten pages – do NOT send us any more than ten pages on the assumption that the runtime will be under ten minutes.

Plays must have at least two characters, and flexible casts (with relatively more female and non-binary roles) are encouraged. We encourage a maximum of 5 speaking roles.

Plays should not have been previously produced and/or published.

We are seeking artworks centric to energy (new and old) and any interpretations thereof. We encourage artists to interpret this theme broadly and creatively. Submissions can explore, but are not limited to, the following aspects:

• Kinetic and potential energy
• Renewable and non-renewable energy sources
• Cosmic and universal energies
• Environmental impacts of energy production and consumption

Maryland Art Place (MAP), in partnership with Quinn Evans, is excited to announce an open call for EXCHANGE. We are seeking artworks centric to energy in relation to the built environment. Artworks can be literal or abstract, but must examine the dynamic relationship between energy systems and architectural spaces, and how these interactions shape our daily lives, environments, and future.

We encourage artists to interpret this theme broadly and creatively. Submissions can explore, but are not limited to, the following aspects:

• The impact of renewable energy sources on urban and rural landscapes.
• The interplay between natural and artificial lighting in architectural design.
• The influence of energy consumption patterns on city planning and infrastructure.
• The role of sustainable practices in shaping the future of building design.
• Personal or societal reflections on energy efficiency and environmental impact.
