“One of the most beautiful and moving pieces of theatre”
– Desert Ensemble Theatre

Truepenny Projects presents the Baltimore premier of Salty by AJ Clauss. Directed by Tessara Morgan and featuring David Brasington, Griffin DeLisle, Vicky Graham, Sydney Marks, Will Murphy, Nigel Semaj and Caitlin Weaver.

Salty is a play about penguins and people. It is set in one of the last remaining conservation zoos in a future gripped by catastrophes created by climate change. Animals have stopped procreating, humans suffer from debilitating headaches, predators run rampant, and amidst it all, two male Adélie penguins decide to parent an egg in their small Antarctic exhibit. Salty cleverly decenters the human experience of climate catastrophe and highlights the inspiring natural animal instinct of survival.

Before and after select performances, there will be talkbacks and informational booths with Baltimore organizations such as 4MyCity, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and Sea Grant!

Follow the show at https://www.instagram.com/truepennyprojects/

Tickets go on sale in April at: https://voxel.org/. Contact Truepenny Projects directly at [email protected] for questions and discounts!

Please note that masks will be required on Sunday performances.

This project is part funded by Maryland State Arts Council.

From the inaugural exhibition, 1977, C. Grimaldis Gallery Mavis Pucey, Paris, May-June, 1977, edition 30 of 40, 36 x 28 inches

DRAWN FROM THE RACKS: Works on Paper | Opening Reception
Thursday, June 12 :: 5:30-7:30pm
@ C. Grimaldis Gallery

C. Grimaldis Gallery is pleased to present Drawn From the Racks: Works on Paper, a group exhibition featuring drawing, print, collage and sculpture pulled directly from the gallery’s archives. Participating artists represent some of C. Grimaldis Gallery’s earliest, most historic schowcases as well as its most recent exhibitors, highlighting paper works that encompass the full breadth of the gallery’s programming.

Many works in this exhibition are made by artists primarily known for their sculptural practice — here creating images that study recurring forms and motifs, but in a slightly altered vocabulary that relies on surface, line, texture and technique to explore their ideas. Richard Serra and Annette Sauermann take materials similarly used in their sculptures and apply them to their “drawings”, where geometry and materiality give way to an expanded experience of depth within the surface plane. Mario Merz and Madeleine Dietz create works that also speak to their iconic forms, whether concrete, natural earth, or found object. Their prints and drawings use paper as an environment to explore structure, color, and light in a new vernacular. Meanwhile, Jae Ko transforms paper into a living voice within her wall sculptures. Through binding, gluing, and submerging, Ko imbues her chosen medium with a soft vitality that evokes the forces of nature.

Drawn From the Racks features a variety of collage work, including those from Baltimore artists Grace Hartigan and Keith Martin, both renowned for their abstract paintings and paper works. As an inherently intimate form of art making, these assemblages provide a unique window into the workings of imagination and artistic decision making. The drawings of Diane Victor, along with Hartigan’s later works, provide figurative anchors amongst the more gestural elements of the show. Bold lines, geometric forms, and nods to architectural structure interplay with notes of vivid color and organic forms, brought forth through and onto paper, in an exhibition that celebrates the full scope of C. Grimaldis Gallery’s 48 years in Baltimore.

Drawn From the Racks: Works on Paper will be on view at C. Grimaldis Gallery from June 11 through July 3, 2025. A reception will take place on Thursday, June 12th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Hours for C. Grimaldis Gallery, which is free and open to the public, are Wednesday through Saturday, 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Bask in the Glow of Illuminated Public Art After Dark!
Saturday June 14 | 6:00–10:30 PM | 1700–1800 N. Charles Street

Keep the energy going after the PRIDE Parade and Charles Street Promenade with an unforgettable evening of light, music, and celebration in the heart of the Station North Arts District!

Join us as Baltimore City unveils two new Inviting Light public art installations, transforming North Charles Street into a glowing hub of creativity and community. The 1700 and 1800 blocks will be closed to traffic and open to joy, offering a radiant backdrop for this special night.

As the official after-party of the Promenade, the streets will light up with large-scale illuminated art, evoking both jubilation and nostalgia. Expect live DJ sets, art, dancing, outdoor dining, Made in Baltimore and other vendors, and an atmosphere buzzing with vibrant energy.

When night falls (9:00-9:30 p.m.), witness the debut of these awe-inspiring Inviting Light public art installations:

· “Big Ass Snake (Plant)s On a Plane” by Phaan Howng at 1714 N. Charles Street channels the energy of blockbuster action films, transforming the Charles Street Garage into an over-the-top, post-human ecology. Phaan’s work reworks our world.

Shore’s work is an homage to real Baltimore people found in their usual haunts.

With an outdoor dance floor and Baltimore club DJs playing hits from the decades – including Ducky Dynamo, GRL PWR, Afrodelic (and more to be announced) and art by Amy Reid inside the Charles Street Garage, it will be a night to remember!

Black Writer’s Pride Week
Monday, June 16 | Ongoing through June 22
@ Charm City Books

Historically, marginalized communities are required to create opportunities for progression while decolonizing themselves from the patriarchal, supremacist’s tenant of scarcity. Non- Heteronormative Black life has been a revolution incubator against that practice by celebrating the abundance within those identities. Writers that meet at the intersections of Black, LGBTQ+, and Gender Expansive life sit at the center of those spaces; doing the work to help us celebrate, grieve, and resist. Black Writer’s Pride Week is a week-long celebration of literary Black life and the voice of Black, non-heteronormative conforming backgrounds.

“I believe that love is the single, true prosperity of any moment.”- June Jordan

For the inaugural year, our theme comes from revolutionary poet, June Jordan. “Love’s Prosperity” is a nod to Jordan’s statement citing how if it were not for her strong community and the ones she chooses to speak up for, she would not know what it means to love herself. This resilient process of softening her heart led to the exploration of the strength and abundance of love. She found a quality in herself that lives beyond us and transcends our true understanding.

Please join us June 16th-22nd at Charm City Books literacy, laughs, and love. Follow us @blackwriterspride to stay connected and get all the tea. Love long and prosper!

Art in Public Places-St Michaels, Maryland
deadline June 14
posted by Mid-Shore Community Foundation

The St. Michaels Public Art Project seeks a permanent public sculpture for the town of St. Michaels, Maryland to be positioned on the grounds of the St. Michaels Museum in St. Mary’s Square.

St Michaels is an historic tourist town, located between 2 bodies of water, on Maryland’s Eastern Shore in Talbot County. There are approximately 1094 residents, augmented by week enders and tourists. There are many vacation homes, locally owned and operated as short term rentals. The Town is 3/4 white and 1/4 African American; there is no sizable Hispanic community.

There are 3 museums and numerous opportunities for recreation: boating, sailing, kayaking, biking, and walking, particularly on a mile long Nature Trail, soon to be extended 1/2 mile, as well as fine dining and shopping. The Town hosts many festivals and parades and a weekly seasonal farmer’s market. There is an active art league which hosts art shows and hangs banners, decorating the streetscape. The walkable town, with its charming historic houses and waterscapes, will benefit immensely from the sentiment and history which art conveys.

The location of this proposed artwork is on St. Mary’s Square, the original center of St. Michaels as designated in the 1778 town plan, a narrow square, a quarter the length of a soccer field, bordered by a narrow one way road. Across the restricted street is the site of the St. Michaels Museum with many exhibits informing visitors of early life in St. Michaels, notably as a shipbuilding center and then with seafood processing businesses. This park, while significant historically, is often overlooked as it is relatively off the beaten path. We hope that by calling attention to the art, it will increase the visitation and appreciation of the Square and of the Museum.
