Holding Space to Bloom | Virtual Exhibition

Galerie Myrtis is proud to announce Holding Space to Bloom, a virtual exhibition bringing together the work of Morel Doucet, Monica Ikegwu, and Ya La’ford, in an exploration of personal, communal, and ecological spaces that nurture belonging, resilience, and collective flourishing. Co-curated by Gallery Directors Noel Bedolla and Ky Vassor, this exhibit examines how care, memory, identity, and the environment shape conditions for growth.
At its core, Holding Space to Bloom considers what it means to cultivate environments where individuals, communities, and ecosystems can thrive. Blooming is both a process and a celebration that recognizes the beauty, strength, and possibility that emerge when care is sustained over time. The works themselves extend this idea beyond the gallery as they become part of homes, collections, and institutions; places where they continue to inspire reflection, connection, and dialogue in everyday life.
Through assemblage, Morel Doucet asserts that the land is a vessel of memory and renewal, serving as a repository for the stories of its stewards. Monica Ikegwu explores the influence of environment on the formation of identity. These intimate hyperrealistic portraits celebrate the richness of everyday Black life, transforming presence into affirmations of cultural continuity and belonging. Ya La’ford invites audiences to engage in a reflective examination of spatial formation and the trajectory of humanity. Through abstraction La’ford navigates the intersections of land, heritage, and global histories. Collectively, featured artists underscore the notion that flourishing emerges through relationships, creativity, and care.
Holding Space to Bloom invites viewers to consider not only the spaces we inhabit, but also the role art plays within them. Works featured serve as archives for memory, conversation, and belonging. They remind us that art does more than reflect our lives; it helps shape the environments where we gather, remember, and ultimately bloom.

RE Framed: A Salon Celebrating Women’s Hair Rituals

Join JMM for an evening celebrating women’s hair rituals, traditions, and culture in connection to the exhibition on view, RE: Intimacy. Image. Identity. This program invites attendees into an evening of reflection, conversation, and community as part of the Core Connections program series inspired by the Museum’s new core exhibition, Jews of Maryland at the Crossroads of Identity. The event highlights the exhibition theme “Agents of Change” which presents historical connections between Black and Jewish communities in Maryland.
The word “salon” holds two distinct meanings. A hair salon is a place of ritual, care, and beautification. A salon-style gathering brings people together for the exchange of ideas, stories, and perspectives. RE Framed draws on the shared meaning: salons as places of connection and community.
This event will feature an array of offerings for guests to immerse themselves in, including a reflection space in the audio/visual production studio, themed participatory activations, light refreshments including alcoholic beverages. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the museum, hear from gathering co-hosts Andria Washington Hanner and Zoë Reznick, experience an intimate salon conversation with special guests, and share their own responses within the space.
The Jewish Museum of Maryland’s 2005 exhibit Intimacy. Image. Identity. Perspectives on Orthodox Jewish Women’s Haircovering presented a traditional form of dress practiced upon marriage. Its series of black and white film photographs by Zoë Reznick traveled across five sites state-wide. Two decades following the development of this project, Museum staff resurfaced the exhibition materials.
Through RE: Intimacy. Image. Identity., the artist reunites the women she photographed and reimagines this body of work through an expanded lens. The exhibition features select framed prints from the original show, archival materials and photographs, and multi-media reflections shared by women participating in the project, illuminating regard for the personal significance of Jewish haircovering practice over time, together, in the present.

Join us for an exploration of the connections between women, music, and the natural world, brought to life through performance and archival discovery.
Baltimore-based acoustic trio The Bayberries (Hana Morford, Samantha Flores, and Danielle Williams) will perform original music rooted in bluegrass and folk traditions, with classical touches and global influences. The program will invite audiences to consider how music has shaped human relationships with the natural world and with one other.
Complementing the performance, historic bound volumes of sheet music from Sheridan Libraries Special Collections will offer a deeper perspective. Created, collected, and passed down by women from the early nineteenth through the twentieth centuries, these volumes reveal how music has preserved cultural memory and connected generations of families and communities.
Together, the music and materials will illuminate how people have long turned to both nature and song as sources of meaning, continuity, and connection.

Join us for a series of in-gallery conversations reflecting on America’s 250th anniversary—an observance that invites us to consider the histories of the people who stewarded the land before the nation’s founding, and the events that have shaped this country since. In these weekly interactive conversations, a guest speaker will explore the themes of liberty, justice, humanity, and equality through the lens of art.
David Fakunle II, Ph.D. is a “mercenary for change,” utilizing skills and occupying spaces to help anyone divested from their truest self, particularly those who are Black, Indigenous and People of Color. David serves as Assistant Professor at the Morgan State University School of Community Health & Policy, Associate Faculty at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Chair of the Maryland Lynching Truth and Reconciliation Commission. David’s interests include stressors within built environments, manifestations of systemic oppression, and the utilization of arts and culture—specifically storytelling—to cultivate holistic health through humanity, justice, equity and ultimately, liberation.

Art with a Heart (AWAH) invites the community to come together and celebrate the work of its 2026 summer students and apprentices.
Shop & Bop takes place Friday, July 31, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m.,at HeARTwares® – the nonprofit’s social enterprise store located at 1104 W. 36th St., Baltimore, MD 21211 on The Avenue in Hampden.
Guests can shop with a purpose for hand-made and one-of-a-kind artwork, jewelry, houseware items, garden ornaments and assorted gifts with meaning. New this year, guests also can select apparel for in-person customization.
Each item is unique and hand crafted with enthusiasm by artists ages 14 to 24, in AWAH’s HeARTworks workforce development program. Students and apprentices create marketable art to sell in HeARTwares®. Overall, HeARTworks provides a collaborative space for youth to experience a structured work environment while building job readiness and life skills.

The Compound Baltimore is proud to present Materio-mancy: a group exhibition guest-curated by Nigerian-born Transdisciplinary artist and Cultural Producer VILLAGER, on view from July 31 to August 22, 2026.
Materio-mancy brings together eight (8) artists currently living and working in Baltimore City into a shared nexus of alchemical inquiry where material sensitivity operates congruently as method and magic, and contemporary urgencies meet historical continuities. Drawing upon a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, assemblage, and installation, the participating artists invite the viewers to embrace, sense, and bear witness to the energy and the magic embedded in the material and the metaphysical, respective and independent of each artist’s temporal and spatial understanding of their practice of alertness which holds time and gesture beyond the body and space itself as divinatory alchemy.
Featuring select works from Alexander D’Agostino, Lehna Huie, G. Pack, VILLAGER, Winter Dior Hart, Jasmeen Al Rayyes, and Anna Divinagracia, Materio-mancy is a call to sustain attention to what you might not immediately hear, touch, see, feel. An invitation to the quiet, potent, and transformative magic which is felt at every level of surface, structure, and spirit. In this field where material and matter carries the magic of memory and intention, the exhibition calls viewers to stand closer and allow their inherent assumptions about what things are to be challenged & interrupted, inviting a slowed sensing, a reexamining one that lingers long enough to regenerate a consideration of what materials have passed through their own lives and what energies, histories, stories, and legacies those encounters have absorbed, deconstructed, produced, and transformed.

Gallery 57 West is an artist-run gallery and part of the Annapolis Arts Alliance, a nonprofit organization that supports the local arts community through exhibitions, educational programming, outreach, and scholarships for high school seniors pursuing the arts. Coming Fall 2026: A clumsy caravan of wise-cracking warriors must work together to save their city from a tyrannical, ancient evil. Audition for this 45-minute concert opera set in a world inspired by tabletop fantasy RPGs produced by the Baltimore Rock Opera Society. Auditions are August 9 and 10, 2026. They are casting singing actors as well as a few non-singing acting roles. Rehearsals will begin in late August and the show will run October/November.

Rural or urban, desert or jungle, ancient to recent. The SE Center is looking for photographers who appreciate the ravages of time and create compelling images reflecting those effects around us. Color or BW, analog, digital or antique processes, photographers of all skill levels and locations are welcome.
Our juror for The Abandoned Landscape is Michael Pannier. Michael Pannier is an award winning professional fine art and commercial photographer now located in Greenville, SC. Previously based in Maryland, Michael has spent 30 years in photography, 45 years in the gallery and art world.
Relocating to South Carolina, The SE Center for Photography was born as an exhibition and education venue for fine photography. Through monthly exhibitions, photographers of all skill levels have the opportunity to have their work presented and the workshops, led by industry leaders, cover all aspects of photography and challenge, encourage and inspire.
Michael is represented in galleries across the country, a frequent exhibition juror and curator, portfolio reviewer and speaker on the business of fine art photography. When not in South Carolina he can be found leading photographic expeditions in Death Valley and the Eastern Sierra.
35-40 selected images will hang in the SE Center’s virtual gallery space for approximately one month. In addition, selected images are featured in the SE Center social media accounts (FB, IG) and an archived, online slide show.

Learning through The Creative Process: Standards-driven Creative Spaces. Participants explore the connective tissue of the Maryland State Fine Arts Standards and the Creative Process. By investigating their own teaching and making methods, participants gain a deeper understanding of their own artistic habits and patterns. We will explore the five arts discipline of the Maryland State Fine Arts Standards: dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual art. This course will be limited to 25 participants.
