In keeping with its long-standing commitment to championing the work of living artists in the Washington, DC, area, The Phillips Collection is proud to present a major exhibition showcasing 48 artists based in the greater DC region. The result of an open call that drew 1,500 applications, the exhibition brings together an intergenerational group of artists who are grappling with the complexities of the contemporary world, while celebrating the beauty, resilience, and determination that inspires their ongoing creative practice.
Luke Farley’s Hands on Fire | Opening Reception

Originally from New Jersey, Luke Farley has been a Baltimore-based artist since 2017. In 2019, he graduated with an MFA in Painting from the LeRoy E. Hoffberger School at MICA. Farley works primarily in painting, but also in collage, sculpture, curation, and theatrical design. He is a co-founder and producer of the interdisciplinary arts organization Truepenny Projects. His most recent roles include world builder and scenic designer for Salty (2025) and curator of A Vital Alliance(2025) at Alchemy of Art.
Hands on Fire
Truepenny Projects is excited to present Hands on Fire at Alchemy of Art opening in August of 2026. This solo exhibition showcases an ongoing series of large-scale paintings by Baltimore artist Luke Farley. Hands on Fire features paintings made over the course of three years, 2023–2026. In this work, Farley foregrounds gesture as metaphor, appearing both literally, through the representation of hands, and phenomenologically, through his painterly approach to image-making. Seen together as a series for the first time, these paintings form a kind of autobiography. The metaphors Farley creates are grounded in a critical engagement with his past, referencing religion as a touchstone. The show sheds light on the role of dogma, providence, and judgment within the artist’s life by asking: Where has this taken me? How does one come to terms with the hypocrisy in their own life?

This August, The 10x10x10 Play Festival is back for the 10th time with a slate of new work that will delight and surprise you. 10 local playwrights created 10 amazing works and you, our audience, will vote on your favorite piece to enter the 10x10x10 Hall of Fame.

The Highlandtown First Friday Art Walk is a free, self-guided walking tour of arts venues, exhibitions, performances, pop-up shops, and more! The neighborhood comes alive with incredible talent, vibrant vendors, and inspiring creations from local makers. Local businesses team up with DJs, musicians, and artists to turn the evening into a full-on celebration—come out, explore, get inspired, and be part of the fun!

Fashion Remix is a creative initiative that invites Baltimore-based fashion designers to take inspiration from artworks in the Walters collection to create original, wearable designs. Fashion Remix highlights how historic art continues to inspire new forms of expression, celebrating Baltimore’s vibrant creative community and connections between past and present. This year’s program connects fashion, history, and storytelling alongside Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture, an exhibition on view at the Walters April 18–August 9.
On August 9, come dressed in your art-inspired best for a mixer with the designers and members of Baltimore’s fashion community at this event held during Baltimore Fashion Week. Across Life-Worlds: A Family History of Soviet Jewish Emigration | Exhibition Opening

Join the Jewish Museum of Maryland for the opening celebration of Across Life-Worlds: A Family History of Soviet Jewish Emigration. Curated by Victoria Smolkin and Vlad Smolkin, the exhibition places the stories of several Soviet Jewish families who came to Maryland in conversation with the global and national politics that enabled their emigration. Through presenting a selection of lived experiences, the exhibition explores how American and Soviet Jews, who began as distant strangers on opposite sides of the Cold War divide, came to see each other as family.
In the late twentieth century, more than a million Soviet Jews left the Soviet Union—the largest ethnic emigration from the USSR, and the largest Jewish migration since the “Great Migration.” In the late 1980s and early 1990s Maryland became a major destination for this Soviet Jewish exodus. Across Life-Worlds follows the stories of these disparate branches of the Jewish family, tracing their converging fates during the Cold War and coming to a focus on their reunification in the U.S.
The exhibition curators, themselves children of Soviet Jewish emigration, capture family stories in interviews, photos, home videos, and objects that reflect the years before their departure and after their arrival—a period that also marks the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. From the American side, the exhibition features the stories of Maryland activists who dedicated themselves to making Soviet Jewish emigration a reality. From the Soviet side, the exhibition features the propaganda and politics that shaped Jewish life in the Soviet Union, from the pages of Pravda to the archives of the KGB. Together, the exhibition presents the collision of life-worlds at the point when ideas and ideals coalesced into life choices. For Soviet Jewish families—persecuted for their ethnic identity and alienated from their religious roots—emigration entailed both a rupture from their past and the possibility to re-envision their future.

Inspired by the final line of June Jordan’s Poem for South African Women, this exhibition explores what it means to hold and wield the power to build something different, together. We are the ones we have been waiting for.
Artists are encouraged to embrace this theme as an interpretative starting point and not a restrictive or literal mandate.
2026 Chrysalis Award for Emerging Ceramic Artists

The Chrysalis Award was created by the James Renwick Alliance for Craft to support and inspire emerging craft artists in the United States. Eligible applicants are those who are in the early stages of their professional artistic careers—regardless of age—and who have completed their training within the past five years. This includes academic programs such as a BFA or MFA, as well as self-directed or alternative forms of study. Artists who have already been curated into major institutional exhibitions (such as at the Renwick Gallery) are not eligible.
Ideal candidates demonstrate excellence in their work and a strong commitment to developing their practice in unique and dynamic ways.
Each year, the award focuses on a different medium. This year’s award will recognize an emerging artist working in ceramics.
The recipient will receive a $5,000 unrestricted award, a one-year JRACraft membership, and the opportunity to present their work at a JRACraft event.

Life in Baltimore welcomes artists across disciplines. Documentary, conceptual, narrative, abstract, and experimental approaches are all encouraged. The exhibition is intentionally broad in theme, allowing artists to interpret “life” through personal, political, social, or poetic lenses.
We are interested in work that asks:
• What does daily life in Baltimore look like now?
• How do communities gather, survive, celebrate, and endure?
• What stories are visible — and which remain unseen?
• How is the present moment shaping the city’s future?

Hillyer is currently accepting proposals for solo and curated exhibitions that will take place at Hillyer’s contemporary art space between January and December 2027. Proposals are open to local, regional, national, and international artists.
All proposals that meet Hillyer’s criteria will be reviewed by Hillyer’s Advisory Committee, which is composed of established artists, curators, and arts professionals, and chaired by Hillyer director, Tim Brown. Through a competitive selection process that will take place over a 4–5 week period, 15 to 25 emerging and accomplished artists and curators will be chosen.
Liu Shiming Artist Grants

Designed to support the work of visual artists during the first decade of their careers, the Liu Shiming Artist Grants support the creation or completion of new projects that explore the interplay between traditional cultural or historical influences and contemporary artistic practice. Each year, up to five artists will be selected to receive a $5,000 grant.
Visual artists who have been working for at least two years (but not more than 10 years) are invited to apply for a grant in support of a current or new project. Final awardees will be chosen by a distinguished panel consisting of the Foundation’s Curatorial Director, an established artist, and accomplished representatives from a cross section of the art world.
