Out of the Picture | Film Screening

Wednesday, October 14 :: 7-9pm
@ UMBC Music Box

The Department of Visual Arts presents screening of Out of the Picture, the first documentary film to examine the vital world of American art criticism. The event will feature a post-screening Q&A and discussion with director Mary Louise Schumacher, offering audiences a unique look into the making of the documentary and the essential role critics play in shaping modern culture.

Directed by University of Maryland, College Park alumna and former Milwaukee Journal Sentinel critic Mary Louise Schumacher, the film follows five influential writers — Carolina Miranda (Los Angeles Times), Hrag Vartanian (Hyperallergic), Jen Graves (The Stranger), Jeneé Osterheldt (The Boston Globe), and independent critic Seph Rodney — navigating a decade of profound cultural reckoning and historic transformation across both art and media.

Admission is free. RSVPs are not required, but will help us plan the event. Please RSVP here in advance.

Out of Bounds Exhibition

Thursday, October 15 | Ongoing through December 31
@ The Kreeger Museum

Hamiltonian Artists and The Kreeger Museum are pleased to present Out of Bounds, an exhibition of the work of seven Hamiltonian Artists Alumni (Selin Balci, Larry W. Cook, Joyce Yu-Jean Lee, Christie Neptune, Allison Spence, Kyle Tata, and Jing (Ellen) Xu) on view at The Kreeger Museum from October 15 through December 31, 2026.

Borrowed from the language of sport, Out of Bounds refers to the space beyond the limits of play. Figuratively, it can describe actions, ideas, or behaviors that go against accepted rules or expectations. Working across painting, photo, sculpture, video, and installation, the artists presented in Out of Bounds consider what it means to question, cross, or redraw established boundaries.

The Hamiltonian alumni’s work will be exhibited alongside selected contemporary works from The Kreeger Museum’s permanent collection, including artists Sam Gilliam, Frank Stella, Simmie Knox, and William Christenberry. Each of these artists was an iconoclast in their day, rejecting rigid geometries and traditional methods of paint application, and pushing the limits of fine art mediums and subject matter. The Hamiltonian alumni bring a similar spirit of ingenuity to their anti-disciplinary practices—experimenting with materials and challenging conventions of figuration and representation.

Jones Falls 2076 | Opening Reception

Thursday, October 15 :: 5-7pm
@ The Peale

The Jones Falls 2076 exhibition at The Peale explores alternative futures for Baltimore’s Jones Falls River, as imagined by artists, designers, writers, and community members.

Baltimore’s founding river has been hidden below I-83 for over 50 years, overlooked and mistreated. This waterway made possible the rise of Baltimore as an American industrial powerhouse. And yet it is out of sight and out of mind for many residents of the city and region. As the elevated expressway covering the Jones Falls nears the projected end of its lifespan, more and more Baltimoreans are imagining and asking for a different future for the river.

Jones Falls 2076 centers on 14 newly-commissioned speculative works that envision a radically restored and reimagined Jones Falls in the year 2076. These works reframe the Jones Falls to come half a century from now through the lens of possibility, imagining the river unburied, reconnected, repaired, and recentered as the ecological, social, and civic heart of Baltimore. The works also ask deeper questions about our relationships to the river, its human and non-human neighbors, and to future generations.

Paul Daniel: Altered Course | Reception

Thursday, October 15 :: 6-8pm
@ Goya Contemporary

Goya Contemporary Gallery is pleased to announce Paul Daniel: Altered Course, an exhibition of kinetic sculpture by Baltimore-based artist Paul Daniel, on view October 9 through November 20, 2026.

Altered Course brings together a selection of Daniel’s modestly scaled kinetic works, offering an intimate encounter with ideas that also animate his larger outdoor public sculptures. At the heart of Daniel’s practice is an interest in movement, balance, transformation, and the shifting relationship between sculpture and its environment. In these works, motion is not simply an effect, but an essential element of the artist’s thought process, and by extension, the viewer’s experience.

Within the gallery, Daniel’s kinetic sculptures invite close observation and engagement. Their interactive movement continually alters the viewer’s perception of form, space, and material. As the works are activated, their relationships to one another shift in turn. The exhibition offers an opportunity to experience, at a more intimate scale, the spatial and perceptual questions that inform Daniel’s monumental public works.

LUSMERLIN: Big Bang Baby | Opening Reception

Friday, October 16 :: 5-9pm
@ Atrium Artspace

Big Bang Baby transforms ancestral divinity, folklore, and science into a radiant universe of light, color, and controlled chaos. At its center are fantastical feminine figures creating universes and experiencing their own divinity. Inspired by Afro-Dominican spiritual traditions of “carrying a mystery,” as well as Native Taíno Zemi goddesses, LUSMERLIN celebrates the gift of spiritual presence and creation in women. Across pastel, acrylic and LED-lit sculptural forms, the exhibition asks: What does it mean to be stardust, to be a source of divinity?

2026/27 Indigenous Art Gallery | Opening

Friday, October 16 :: 6pm
@ Baltimore Center Stage

Baltimore Center Stage invites you to the opening of our 2026/27 Indigenous Art Gallery at 6pm on Oct 16. We’re expanding the art throughout our spaces to reflect the artists, cultures, histories, and communities that make Baltimore what it is. Get to know this year’s cohort of Indigenous artists whose work will be on display all season. Refreshments by Five Feathers Productions with a performance by Patrick Brooks.

250 Years on Stolen Land brings together local Indigenous artists and artifacts from the Baltimore American Indian Center to confront the history, language, and lasting reality of Indigenous displacement. Through art and cultural objects, the gallery invites audiences to learn from Indigenous voices, reckon with the land Baltimore occupies, and consider what it means to acknowledge a history that is still present.

Fire Fest 2026

Saturday, October 17 :: 5:30-8:30pm
@ Baltimore Clayworks

Enjoy live music from the Augie Snackie Show, Daphne London, and Sons of Baltimore!

Test your clay skills! Sign up to participate in the Clay Olympics, multiple competitions and feats of strength that will take your clay skills to new heights – literally. Winners will earn handmade clay prizes.

Watch live demonstrations! Experience Raku kiln firings, with origins tracing back to China and Japan, and an Obvara kiln firing, lead by professor Trisha Kyner of CCBC, with origins in the Baltic region of Eastern Europe.  Both ceramic firing processes are thrilling and involve pulling clay vessels from a 1650°F kiln and then quickly plunging them into cooler materials that shock the glaze and create mesmerizing markings.

Throughout Fire Fest and the weekend, guests can also experience Baltimore Clayworks’ Community Woodfiring of our Noborigama kiln, the first urban Japanese ascending kiln operating in the Baltimore region. Wood Kiln Technician Jeremy Wallace will lead students from Towson University, Community College of Baltimore County, Anne Arundel Community College and Morgan State University through the two-day firing process. During this time, the kiln must be fed wood, day and night, to reach 2300°F. Vessels take on a rich variety of colorful flashing and unpredictable glaze effects from either the wood ash or soda chamber. After a week of cooling, pieces emerge with markings from their nights spent dancing with fire.

Proceeds from this event will ensure the continuation of the incredible artistic and educational programs housed at Baltimore Clayworks’ Mt. Washington studio and gallery and in locations around Baltimore City through our Community Arts program. Enjoy a fun-filled evening with friends and family and make a difference by supporting clay artists of all ages and abilities across the Baltimore region.

UNDER $2500 2026

deadline November 20
posted by Maryland Art Place

Have your work purchased by local buyers & collectors, just in time for the holidays! Maryland Art Place (MAP) is seeking artists for UNDER$2500, our upcoming winter benefit exhibition & affordable art sale. The exhibition will include approximately 1-3 works by each selected artist (scale dependent – in the case of smaller works more than 3 pieces may be accepted). Each individual piece must retail for $2,500 or less.

Why UNDER $2500? In the last 2 years inflation has been a huge contributing factor to rising artwork sales prices. Simply put, the cost of goods for artists to create their art is far higher than it used to be. The majority of galleries consider the most important contemporary artwork value segments to be under $5,000–$10,000 according to ARTSY (2023.) It is with that in mind that MAP is presenting UNDER $2500 as affordable.
