The Daily Hustle: The Photographs of I. Henry Phillips, Sr.
Ongoing through February 2026
@ Baltimore Museum of Industry

A photo exhibition celebrating resilience, community, and grace.

Webster Phillips and the Baltimore Museum of Industry are proud to present “The Daily Hustle” — a collection of photographs that depict Baltimore’s Black workers and business owners, emphasizing their grace, style, and community strength. These images challenge common perceptions of Baltimore as impoverished and crime-ridden, instead highlighting a vibrant cultural history often erased by redlining and disinvestment. They demonstrate how entrepreneurship and labor build community, portraying African American neighborhoods and street corners as symbols of hope.

Webster Phillips, a third-generation photographer and storyteller, curated this meaningful collection, which spotlights the enduring spirit and contributions of Baltimore’s Black community. The exhibit aims to foster optimism, promote racial equity, and deepen understanding of the city’s diverse workforce.

Snoozing Sun | Opening Reception
Friday, August 29 :: 6-9pm
@ Gallery CA

Gallery CA is proud to present Snoozing Sun, a solo exhibition from Baltimore based artist Yoon Sun Shin. The exhibition will be on view from Friday, August 29th, through September 26th, with an opening reception on Friday, August 29th, from 6-9 pm. There will be more programming announcements to follow.

Yoon Sun’s work as a painter and visual artist is rooted in his experimentation with craft, playful exploration of technique, and materials. His background in framing and the use of imperfect materials around him inform this body of work, as well as an appreciation for nature and the camaraderie of spending time in it. Passionate about skateboarding and fishing, these meditative practices are reflected in the three distinct but overlapping visual languages presented in Snoozing Sun, which include mixed media, oils, as well as found objects in the use of collaged readymades in the form of etch a sketch.

About The Artist: Yoon Sun Shin is an artist, custom picture framer, and skateboarder born in Incheon, South Korea. If he’s not making frames for collectors and museums, you’d find him in and around Baltimore city riding his skateboard, exploring his surroundings. His other passions involve fishing and being in nature which he uses as inspiration for his art practice.

About GALLERY CA: GALLERY CA is a contemporary arts space devoted to showcasing residents, local, regional, national and international artists. The gallery also serves as an agent for community engagement by offering regular programming and creating sustainable partnerships with local arts institutions and community organizations. Gallery CA is located on the ground floor of City Arts apartments, one of two residential buildings providing affordable live/work spaces for practicing artists. August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson
Sunday, August 31 :: Ongoing through September 28
@ Everyman Theatre

This Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, presented as part of Baltimore’s August Wilson Celebration, tells the story of a pair of siblings and the fate of their cherished family heirloom: a piano carved with images of their ancestors previously owned by the family’s former enslavers. Set in 1930s Pittsburgh, the play weaves history and spirituality together in a haunting narrative that explores the conflict between protecting one’s heritage and forging a path into the future.

The Brave: Affirming Power, Presence & Possibility | Opening Reception
Saturday, August 30 :: 6-8pm
@ Galerie Myrtis

Galerie Myrtis is pleased to present The Brave: Affirming Power, Presence & Possibility, a powerful group exhibition curated by Dr. Myrtis Bedolla. The exhibition features contemporary artists whose work explores the emotional, historical, and imaginative landscapes of the African diaspora. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, August 30th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Details on programming to be announced.

Inspired by the anthemic lyrics of Danielle Ponder’s “Some of Us Are Brave,” the exhibition centers artists who examine the complexities of Black freedom, the weight of injustice, and the radical potential of self-definition. Through painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and installation, The Brave calls forth a collective testimony that honors ancestral strength, celebrates embodied truth, and demands space for joy, grief, intimacy, and transformation.

At the heart of the exhibition is a commitment to the exploration of Black interiority—the inner life, emotional depth, and spiritual sovereignty of Black people. These artists do not simply respond to the violence of visibility; they carve out space to dream, to remember, and to imagine. Their works challenge systemic erasure and reclaim narrative authority, illuminating lived realities and affirming beauty, vulnerability, and power on their own terms.

Featured artists include: Devin Allen, Lavett Ballard, Jerrell Gibbs, Fabiola Jean-Louis, Felandus Thames, Megan Lewis, Delita Martin, Ronald Jackson, M. Scott Johnson, Ya La’Ford, and Bria Wilson-Sterling.

Danielle Ponder’s words—“All we want is to be ourselves, shine our light with no problems”—echo throughout the exhibition like a freedom chant. Her lyrics serve as a manifesto for those who refuse to be silenced or constrained by the gaze of others. The featured artists show us how tenderness can hold power, how pain can be a catalyst for creation, and how identity, in all its multiplicity, is a terrain of strength.

The Brave is both mirror and portal: a space where beauty stands its ground, where power is redefined, and where presence and possibility are made visible.

The exhibit runs from August 30 – October 11, 2025. Gallery hours: Tuesday – Saturday by appointment, 2:00 – 6:00 pm. Hours extended during special events. For additional information on the exhibition, please contact the gallery at (410) 235‐3711 or Ky Vassor, Assistant Director, at [email protected]. For sales inquiries, please contact our Sales Director, Noel Bedolla, at [email protected].

The Contemporary Landscape
deadline September 25
posted by SE Center for Photography

The landscape, whether grand or personal, has been a subject of photography since the beginning and played an important role in establishing photography as a fine art medium. Early on, both in history and most photographers experience, the landscape was one of most accessible and familiar subjects available.

Our juror for the Contemporary Landscape is Jeff Schewe. Schewe has been an award winning Advertising Photographer in Chicago for over 30 years. He is accomplished in tabletop, location, portraiture and particularly accomplished in computer imaging.

Jeff shoots a variety of subject matter and likes to control as much of the production as possible. He does this by making his own models, designing and building his own sets, painting backgrounds and employing computer imaging. He has been doing his own imaging for almost 20 years in house on his high-end Macintosh systems.

Jeff Schewe has been described as a Photoshop Guru’s Guru. He’s on the inside of the development and testing of Photoshop, Camera Raw and Lightroom and has helped guide and direct many features since Photoshop 4.0. Short of some of the Photoshop engineers, there’s probably not many people who knows Photoshop like Jeff.

35-40 selected images will hang in the SE Center’s Virtual gallery space for approximately one month. In addition, selected images are featured in the SE Center social media accounts (FB, IG, Twitter) and an archived, online slideshow. A video walkthrough of each exhibition is also featured and archived.

Open Call for Huddle: A $99 Exhibition
deadline September 28
posted by Vox Populi

Vox Populi is now accepting submissions for our 2025 juried exhibition and fundraiser, Huddle, a $99 Exhibition, from now through September 28, 2025. We invite artists within a 90-mile radius of Philadelphia to donate one artwork measuring exactly 8” x 10” to be shown and sold at Vox Populi from November 7 through December 15, 2025. All artworks will be sold for $99, with all proceeds going directly to Vox Populi to support our ongoing programming and operations.

Huddle is an anti-auction and an act of solidarity. All works are the same size, priced equally, and displayed anonymously. Artist names will only be revealed after a work is sold, creating a democratic space for both artists and collectors to connect outside of typical hierarchies.

We welcome a wide range of media—including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, printmaking, conceptual pieces, and more. Work must measure 8” x 10”, be unframed unless framing is integral to the piece, and be signed only on the back or underside (or left unsigned).

Each contributing artist will be featured on Vox Populi’s website and social media, receive a free drink ticket for the Preview Event on November 5th, and be part of a high-energy, community-driven exhibition that connects artists with new audiences and collectors.

Now in its fourth year, the $99 Exhibition directly fuels Vox Populi’s mission to support experimental work, provide platforms for underrepresented artists, and operate as a collectively run space for contemporary art. All funds raised go toward artist honorariums, programming costs, facilities upkeep, and First Friday events.

Submission is free, and selected artists will be notified by October 1, 2025. Works not sold during the exhibition will be available for pickup after December 13-15, 2025. Please note: This is a donation-based exhibition. Vox Populi is unable to provide payment or cover shipping/transportation costs.
