ANTONIOxEREZ was born in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, in 1990. He earned a BFA from the Arts & Design School in his hometown before moving to Avignon, France, where he completed an MFA with a minor in Cultural Anthropology at the École Supérieure d’Art d’Avignon. He relocated to the United States in 2018 and is represented by Sharon Weiss in the Midwest.
Social Organs serves as a documentation and inquiry of our social structures. It started in 2022, after I moved to two countries away from Spain, my birthplace. The series became a sold-out show in Columbus, Ohio, in 2025.
The visual research questions the truth that serves as the base for the political myth of rugged individualism, installed in the US since the 1930s. The research uncovers that the tissue sustaining the social megastructure are our social interactions, the shared support feeding the living structure we created ourselves.
The paintings made since 2022, including 15 new works that will premiere at The Alchemy of Art in October, are objects that expose what the myth of individual success conceals. We move through a vast, entangled organism of influence and production, believing ourselves just individuals, when in reality we are the Organs.
Influenced by the traditional school of painting of Spain with maximum representation by Antonio Lopez-Garcia, ANTONIOxEREZ moved to explore other territories of art like illustration and graphic design where he ended mixing everything together to create the paintings who are characteristic of the series Social Organs.
ANTONIOxEREZ process begins with gathering alongside the groups he documents. He then follows a traditional technique: first projecting the images taken during these gatherings to render the base, where he allows himself the freedom to correct, add, or subtract shapes as needed. From there, he begins the painting process itself, which entirely disregards that initial groundwork, trusting that line and brushstroke alone will convey a unique message once the painting is complete. Throughout, he adds doodles that recall his childhood, lightening the weight of the paintings and suggesting to take life less serious.
ANTONIOxEREZ is part of the research group at the University of Seville’s College of Fine Arts.
Beyond his visual art practice, he leads GG Cultural Projects, an organization connecting professional artists internationally to develop collaborative projects that involve the community in the creative process.
The Community That Builds You, by ANTONIOxEREZ
The Alchemy of Art is a local contemporary art gallery located in Fells Point, Baltimore. We focus on, but are not limited to, local Baltimore up-and-coming artists. The building, a historic convent converted into a modern space, still contains its original chapel. The large room is a unique space for exhibitions, with its abundance of natural light and its beautiful arched ceilings. There is also a small stage located in the back where we invite DJs and musicians to perform on occasion. The gallery was recently awarded Baltimore Style Magazine’s Viewer’s Choice Award for Best Gallery of 2018.
