Gallery Experience: The Revolutionary Legacyof Isadora Duncan

oin Word Dance Theater for a dynamic in-gallery program exploring the revolutionary legacy of modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan, held in conjunction with the ongoing exhibition Revolutions: Art from the Hirshhorn Collection, 1860–1960. Combining live dance performance with discussion, the program examines Duncan’s impact through the themes of artistic rebellion, political radicalism, and feminism.

Nine drawings of Duncan by Russian American artist Abraham Walkowitz are currently on view in the galleries. Beginning around 1910, Walkowitz produced hundreds of ink drawings inspired by the dancer’s performances, capturing not only her likeness, but also her kinetic force in swift, looping lines that evoke motion, emotion, and the radical spirit of her dance. Rejecting the rigid conventions of classical ballet, Duncan embraced natural movement and the expressive potential of the body, helping to redefine dance as a modern art form.
