For Stuart P Stein, to Sustain means to support, keep going, or endure something over a period of time. Years ago, he heard Grace Hartigan talk about producing work in the context of mining a vein until it comes to cessation. Sustaining one’s art means different things to different artists, and in his case, this led to three different veins of selected work which has been a product of large changes in his life.

On view are large oil paintings of dynamic distorted figures in OD fatigues that may insinuate AI mistakes, tightly rendered gouache paintings of idealized urban industrial landscapes vaguely recalled from walks as a young boy along the waterfront with his father, and a variety of gouache, watercolor and graphite works featuring fractured images or people, often with dogs as metaphors of their human companions.

Gallery Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 11am-5pm+ and by appt.
