The Right Hand Forgets the Left | Closing Reception

Red Giant
403 N. Paca Street
Baltimore, MD

Red Giant is pleased to present The Right Hand Forgets the Left, new paintings by artist Ellie Works. Across the exhibition, images of decay find themselves situated beside soccer games, french portrait painting, bowls of apples and within bedrooms. Icons, colors and found materials restlessly swap bodies, resisting straight-forward interpretation. Works’ paintings are unplanned and accumulative, built out of experimentation and whatever she drags back to the studio: lamp shades, Dunkin’ Donut cups, reproductions of 16th century paintings and chair legs. Visible in many of the exhibition’s paintings is evidence of Works’ doubt, indecision and time spent in the studio; Faint outlines of painted over forms, dense textures beside thin, layered color fields and stranded staples from previously attached material meld on the surfaces of her work. For Works, doubt and uncertainty are as structural to painting as color or composition. These works produce meaning from the awkward, restless encounters between the artist, materials and time spent in the studio. When things go right with all this restless energy, meaning leaks out of the paintings like sweat.

The Right Hand Forgets the Left is on view July 11 through August 22, 2026 at Red Giant, 403 N. Paca Street, Baltimore, MD 21211. To make an appointment, DM @redgiantgallery on Instagram, email [email protected], or call (410) 989-1430.
