Abstract artist Donald Baechler ’77 (painting) creates his paintings in 3-D with additions of mixed materials, often including his own photographs. Playing off the themes of childhood whimsy and pop art, he draws also from the realms of folk art, outsider art, and the New York School. After graduating from MICA, he went to Cooper Union for his MFA, and then decided he needed a break from New York and went to Germany for a year. Baechler found his place in the 1980s New York art scene among icons he considered his friends: Tony Shafrazi, Keith Haring, and Kenny Scharf. At MICA, he will talk about current projects, his processes, and his sources of inspiration.

The Monday Artist at Noon Lecture Series is organized by the drawing, general fine arts, painting, and printmaking Senior Thesis program. Click here for more info.
