Ta-Nehisi Coates: “The Message”
Wednesday, October 2 :: 7pm
@ Enoch Pratt FREE Library, Central Branch

The Brown Lecture series is pleased to welcome Ta-Nehisi Coates to the Pratt.

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Between the World and Me journeys to three resonant sites of conflict to explore how the stories we tell—and the ones we don’t—shape our realities.

Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell’s classic “Politics and the English Language,” but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories—our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking—expose and distort our realities.

In the first of the book’s three intertwining essays, Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind. Then he takes readers along with him to Columbia, South Carolina, where he reports on his own book’s banning, but also explores the larger backlash to the nation’s recent reckoning with history and the deeply rooted American mythology so visible in that city—a capital of the Confederacy with statues of segregationists looming over its public squares. Finally, in the book’s longest section, Coates travels to Palestine, where he sees with devastating clarity how easily we are misled by nationalist narratives, and the tragedy that lies in the clash between the stories we tell and the reality of life on the ground.

Written at a dramatic moment in American and global life, this work from one of the country’s most important writers is about the urgent need to untangle ourselves from the destructive myths that shape our world—and our own souls—and embrace the liberating power of even the most difficult truths.

New/Next Film Fest
Thursday, October 3 | Ongoing through October 6
@ The Charles Theatre

The New/Next Film Festival, a celebration of emerging film culture presented by Baltimore Public Media, returns Oct. 3-6 to the historic The Charles Theatre.

The 2024 festival has expanded to four days to feature more films and visiting filmmakers, and also includes at least two free screenings for our community.

The Charles Theatre will again be New/Next’s home base, while activations are planned for independently run venues in the area including Baltimore Improv Group, Metro Gallery and others.

A limited number of All Access Passes are available now. Lineup and event details will also be announced starting in early September.

New/Next, initially conceived as a reaction to the announcement that the Maryland Film Festival (MdFF) would not have a 2023 festival, drew roughly 3,000 attendees over three days during its inaugural festival (August 18-20, 2023).

The festival’s 2023 lineup featured diverse film work of international scope alongside new and repertory work from the Baltimore film scene; more than half of the films screened were directed by women or non-binary creators, and more than half had ties to Baltimore and Maryland.

Details on the festival will continue to be updated at newnextfilmfestival.com

Support for the 2024 New/Next Film Festival comes from the Maryland State Arts Council, the State of Maryland, BakerArtist.org, the Leidy Foundation, Meyerhoff Fund, Baltimore Community Foundation and Maryland Film Office.

In the Stacks: Seasons of the Witch

@ Peabody Library

Soprano Mandy Brown and pianist Tatiana Loisha will open the 2024/25 In the Stacks Concert Series with a captivating performance exploring the history of witchcraft and persecution of women labeled as witches.

Drawing inspiration from historic and rare books about witchcraft and herbalism from the George Peabody Library’s historic collection—on display for one night only—the program will trace the evolution of witch stereotypes and reconcile these inaccuracies with true stories of women who were often healers and sages.

Enjoy an evening of music, history, and rare books in one of the world’s most beautiful libraries!

Yours, Mine, and Ours: Works by the strong and sensitive, features the 2024 cohort of Our Art Room Artist Collective (OAR). The exhibition embraces the labor of love in forging reciprocal relationships and establishing holistically supportive environments for the modern creative. This body of work coalesces around themes of care, stewardship of land, and spiritual healing, offering that building a new world must also respect the sensitivities of the creative. This respect is one that is principled, honest, and a challenge to the marginal bars of the ‘art world’, its institutions, and its decaying standards.

Our Art Room is a critique series and collective of Baltimore-based women, femmes, and gender non-conforming emerging artists founded in 2023. The collective is an annual incubator for artists to expand networks, share resources, and have accountability to their practices. Partnering with Baltimore organizations, Our Art Room hosts free and accessible professional development and creative workshops to their artists and the greater Baltimore community.

MADYHA LEGHARI The Index Found images of 99 blank pages inkjet archival prints, 140” by 100”

HEIRLOOM: Islam & Print Cohort Exhibition | Opening Reception
Friday, October 4 :: 6-9pm
@ Gallery CA

Islam & Print presents HEIRLOOM featuring the work of 2024 artist fellows Hoor Imad Sherpao, Madyha Leghari, and Mina Sarfaraz. The exhibition is curated by Islam & Print co-founders Dan Flounders and Safiyah Cheatam, and will be held at Gallery CA with an opening reception on Friday, October 4 at 6–9 p.m. and on view through November 8, 2024.

What are the things we pass down through generations?
 For the 2024 Islam & Print cohort, it’s a 14th-century marriage certificate, folktales of heaven and hell, and one’s mother tongue. Precious and sacred, we cling to memories of the past to have a relationship with our ancestors and maintain our connections to cultural heritage, land, and so much more. In Heirloom, Hoor
 Imad Sherpao, Madyha Leghari, and Mina Sarfaraz act as either the receiver or giver of traditions, and sometimes both.

Hoor, a self-proclaimed “collector of skills,” uses an evolved
 neo-Persian miniature style of painting and sculpture that embraces the traditional golds and porcelain materials of the classical style. Madyha’s conceptual storytelling and literalism weaves their way into experimental video, illustration, and interactive art. Mina’s embrace of the natural world and poetry is incorporated in her textile and sculptural work. This multimedia exhibition will showcase skills across artistic genres that amplify the work of Muslim artists with various expressions of Islam.

BJC Focus: In The Making
Saturday, October 5 – Sunday October 6
@ Baltimore Jewelry Center

The BJC Focus symposium is a free annual event that features workshops, demonstrations and presentations all centered around a particular theme. Our featured speakers are artists and intellectuals who are well-studied and acquainted with the chosen topic for the year. The symposium, while developed with jewelry and metalsmithing students and enthusiasts in mind, is free and open to the public, with something to offer everyone.

Our 2024 symposium, BJC Focus: In the Making, will investigate the role of memory and archiving in the processes artists and makers use to source inspiration, conduct research, create work, and document their projects. The first day of our symposium will feature speakers whose academic or artistic work intersects with the idea of memory or the functionality of the archive. Featured speakers will be: Lamar Gayles, Ana María Jiménez, Maria Konschake, and Manon van Kouswijk. Our day of online lectures and conversations will be followed by a day of free workshops in the BJC studio, each connected to the symposium theme.

The event will culminate with a charge to artists to participate in our community challenge; this year’s challenge will engage our community in launching the BJC’s newest initiative: a digital archive capturing our history and evolution.

Claire Campbell Park: Still Point in the Motion of Being // From This Nature Springs | Opening Receptions
Saturday, October 5 :: 4-6pm | Ongoing through October 30
@ Goya Contemporary

Claire Campbell Park: Still Point in the Motion of Being

Goya Contemporary Gallery (Baltimore) is delighted to announce the forthcoming exhibition of Claire Campbell Park, her second solo showcase, which will be on view from September 18th through October 30th, 2024.

In her exhibition titled Still Point in the Motion of Being, Park aims to capture a sense of “reverence, dignity, hope, and peace amidst a world where these qualities are often overlooked, while acknowledging the realities and challenges we face.”

Through meticulously crafted woven objects, she seeks to evoke a profound connection and understanding. Park articulates, “I see in the vast and the small an eternal stillness within themotion of being, the promise of qualities worth living and struggling for. I strive for this beauty which connects us and am delighted when viewers tell me the work clears their minds, heals, calms, supports them in living their own best intentions, their own integrity.“

Claire Campbell Park’s artistic endeavors extend far beyond weaving. She employs high-quality linen and meticulously arranges colors to produce intricate and nuanced patterns. With a career spanning over four decades, Park has honed her skills in working with this medium since the 1970’s, a period during which weaving experienced a resurgence in popularity. Her focus is on the conceptual aspects of color and texture, rather than merely the technical aspects of weaving. Her work challenges the traditional textile art of the early 20th century, which often prioritized the practical aspects of the craft. Instead, Park utilizes color and texture to create a more immersive sensory experience.
