The Sterlings | Opening Reception + Artist TalkThursday, November 7 :: 6pm
Oct 10 – Nov 22, 2024
@ Julio Fine Arts

In “The Sterlings”, Bria Sterling-Wilson delves into the complexities of family, identity, and generational ties through her powerful collages and photography. Using family photographs as her foundation, Sterling-Wilson stitches together fragments of memory to craft a visual narrative that honors the significance of legacy and cultural heritage.

Her artistic process involves carefully selecting, deconstructing, and reassembling archival materials, reflecting how we piece together our understanding of family history and personal identity. Sterling-Wilson, as the author of her own narrative, preserves her lineage by integrating elements from her family archives and actively shapes its continuing story. Through intimate scenes captured in her childhood home, she builds upon her family archive to explore shared memories.The collages and photographs in “The Sterlings” bridge the past and present, emphasizing the intergenerational connections that define familial bonds. Through layered imagery and textures, Sterling-Wilson invites viewers to actively engage and reflect on their own relationships with family, culture, and traditions.

L’Appel du Vide: New Work by Beth-Ann Wilson | Opening Reception
Friday, November 8 :: 5-9pm
@ Night Owl Gallery

Night Owl Gallery owner Beth-Ann Wilson spent the first 2 weeks of December 2023 creating art at the Chateau Orquevaux International Artist Residency in Orquevaux France. This show is an exhibition of work created during her time there as well as work created in her home studio inspired by her time in France.

Beth-Ann’s approach to painting in France quickly evolved as she spent time in the studio there. Her plan to work on many small pieces soon was scrapped in favor of working very large. Incorporating collage elements from found objects in the chateau, from local adventures, and scraps of writing from some of her cohort, Beth-Ann sought out the less-than-bucolic passages of the French countryside. As with her work stateside, Beth-Ann draws inspiration from the everyday, the mundane, and even the ugly. Four and a half hours southeast outside of Paris, the region is know for fine wine, however the area immediately surrounding the residency was mostly agricultural and industrial.

Meet the artist and enjoy light refreshments during the Station North Second Friday Art Walk.

Artist Bio

Beth-Ann Wilson (American, b. Copiague, NY 1983, lives and works in Baltimore, MD) is an award-winning artist, gallery owner, creative entrepreneur, educator, and community organizer.  Her art focuses on expressive painted portraits suffused with colorful abstractions as well as energetic landscapes and cityscapes painted both in the studio and en plein air.  Scenes depicted are inspired by the places she has traveled to and explored both near and far.

Owning and operating Night Owl Gallery, a brick-and-mortar artist-run exhibition space in Baltimore, MD, has allowed her to work on projects that bring together the community, foster creativity, and nurture artists from underserved demographics.  Now in its 8th year, Night Owl Gallery has evolved into a dynamic exhibition and gathering space for creatives and art enthusiasts.  Having recently expanded to a 4000 square foot space in the heart of central Baltimore with the addition of artist studio spaces to their offerings, Night Owl Gallery continues to support the stability and growth of artists working in the Baltimore/DC metro area.

Wilson also teaches Creative Entrepreneurship at Maryland Institute College of Art and is an active member of the alumni community.

When not painting or working, Wilson enjoys outdoor adventures (particularly hiking and backpacking), vegan cooking, listening to audiobooks, an early afternoon IPA in a dive bar, and spending time with her husband and 2 stinky dogs.

The Me Before The War No Longer Exists: Ukrainian Portraits by Elena Volkova | Public Reception
Saturday, November 9 :: 1-4pm
@ Stevenson University

The Me Before The War No Longer Exists: Ukrainian Portraits is a participatory project that engages the community of Ukrainians displaced by war in collaborative creation of wet plate collodion portraits, with the aim to provide a platform for refugees to reclaim their sense of selfhood.

The project is framed through photography’s function to reflect society and convey truth, poetically. Utilizing it as a form social practice, I facilitate collaborative creation of portraits, using the historic wet plate collodion process, digital photography, and video. I am interested in emergent properties of collaboration and the agile process of shaping images, where the experience of making is centered. Ukrainian Portraits aims to bring visibility to people displaced by war, who are engaged in a delicate negotiation between their personal lives, communal backgrounds, and their emerging identities as displaced individuals. This project is guided by my own experiences of displacement; it addresses the themes of belonging, ambiguity, liminality, and subjectivity. The resulting images reflect a sense of transition, becoming, or, being in between, woven into the project’s narrative of reclaiming one’s selfhood. My creative role intertwines with the complexities of immigration, trauma, loss, and ambiguity that surrounds it. Through shared presence and creative collaboration, a unique artistic experience emerges, blurring the lines between the subject, creator, and audience.

Bio: Elena Volkova is a Ukrainian-born artist and educator, whose creative practice uses historic and contemporary photographic techniques to delve into the complex themes of liminality by exploring the nuances of subjective experiences. Volkova exhibited nationally and internationally, and has been a recipient of Rubys Grant, Baltimore Municipal Art Society Travel Prize, and a fellow at Hamiltonian Artists, in addition to other recognitions and awards that support her creative practice. Volkova has been a social practice resident artist at Maryland Center for History and Culture, Anacostia Arts Center, and Maker General among others, and her work is included in various private and public collections, including Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore Museum of Art, and MDHC. Volkova resides in Baltimore, MD and teaches Photography at Stevenson University.
