Wye Oak Lecture Series—Finding Black Identity in Early American Art
Thursday, December 12 :: 5:30-7:30pm
@ Maryland Center for History and Culture

How can curators uncover the full stories and identities of Black representation in early American images? Join Emelie Gevalt, PhD, Curatorial Chair for Collections and Curator of Folk Art at the American Folk Art Museum, and co-curator of the recent acclaimed exhibition, Unnamed Figures: Black Presence and Absence in the Early American North, in exploration of this topic. Sift through examples from the exhibition and MCHC collections to learn about the research processes and archival discoveries that contextualize and even help name some of these figures. Investigate the uncomfortable convention of including enslaved companions in portraits to better understand who they were and what their inclusion meant.

Doors open at 5:30 pm. Lecture begins at 6 pm. Light reception to follow.

BmoreArt C+C: A Night of Music Memories and Storytelling with Edgar Reyes and valentina (DJ)
Friday, December 13 :: 6-9pm
@ Connect + Collect

Join us on Friday, December 13, from 6:00–9:00 PM at BmoreArt Connect+Collect for a special event exploring the deep connections between music, memory, and storytelling.

Artist Edgar Reyes and DJ, curator, and organizer valentina will share stories about the role of music in their lives and creative practices. Through a dynamic dialogue, they will reflect on how music serves as a vessel for memories, a means of preserving history, and a source of healing and resilience. Valentina will bring these themes to life through an immersive musical experience, curating a playlist entirely from vinyl records, inspired by Edgar’s art practice and the artworks exhibited in the gallery. Guests are invited to listen, reflect, and share their own memories and stories sparked by the rhythms and lyrics resonating throughout the space.

This event celebrates storytelling through music as a powerful channel for uplifting stories of migration, resilience, and cultural identity. By blending personal narratives with different beats and melodies, valentina and Edgar Reyes will illuminate the profound role of music in amplifying voices and sharing experiences often left unheard. Together, we’ll explore how music connects us, fosters reflection, and preserves shared histories.

This event has limited space available, so please RSVP as soon as possible before the form closes.

Maryland Opera presents “Sounds of the Season”
Friday, December 13 :: 7pm
@ St. Mark’s Lutheran Church

Maryland Opera celebrates the holidays with “Sounds of the Season” featuring seasonal music and opera arias and duets, including our holiday tradition:  a staged presentation of the most famous Christmas Eve scene in opera, the Finale of Act 1 of Puccini’s La Bohème.  The performances are Friday, December 13, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. in the barn at Boordy Vineyards and Sunday, December 15, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church on St. Paul Street.  Tickets are $34 for adults and $18 for students with valid student ID.

Soprano Rachel Blaustein, tenor Angel Raii Gomez, and Denyce Graves Foundation Artistic Ambassador baritone Marvin Wayne join us to sing opera, operetta and seasonal favorites sure to put you in the holiday mood.

The Friday night performance in the gorgeous Boordy Vineyards barn will feature one silent auction item and a new tradition, our Ugly Sweater Contest.  Wear your best ugly holiday sweater for a chance to win a free bottle of wine.

“In a world that seems to be full of turmoil and upheaval, we desperately need the beatify and solace of great music,” said Harp.  “Holiday music can provide so much of that needed respite as we turn to family and friends in this gladsome season of love and peace.  Our internationally renowned soloists will be joined by an emerging young Artistic Ambassador from the Denyce Graves Foundation in a program sure to stir memories of past holidays and create new ones!  The highlight of the concert will be a fully staged presentation of the most famous Christmas Eve in opera—the inale of Act 1 of La Bohème.  As Mimì and Rodolfo sing “Amor, Amor” as they go in to the starry December night, may our hearts and minds join with them in our hopes for a world of peace, unity and love.”

Please join us as we showcase the Baker artists!

Over 150 Baltimore-Area artists bring some of the region’s newest art off the web and onto the walls of America’s oldest museum. Each year, up to 1,000 artists create a Baker Artist Portfolio, at www.bakerartist.org, making it one of the largest digital collections of work by Baltimore-area artists. This exhibition invites any artist with a Baker Artist Portfolio to show one piece of art at The Peale.

The Baker Artist Portfolios were created in 2009 to support artists and promote Greater Baltimore as a strong creative community. The portfolios  are open to artists over the age of 21, working in all disciplines, who live and work in Baltimore City and its five surrounding counties.  The Baker Artist Portfolios were created by the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund, and are a program of the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance.

The David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland, College Park is currently accepting applications for a one-year, 2025-2026 postdoctoral fellowship sponsored by the Mellon Foundation. The fellowship provides curatorial training and supports scholarly research on the David C. Driskell Center collection. The fellow is fully integrated into The Driskell Center staff with duties, privileges, and status equivalent to those of an assistant curator. This will include developing the exhibition framework, creating the object checklist, determining layouts, preparing exhibition interpretation, writing for the exhibition catalog and/or contributing written content for web-based platforms, and, where possible, contributing to in-person public programming for audiences in College Park, as well as virtual programming for nationwide audiences. Anna Rabinowitz Poetry & Art Prize
deadline December 31
posted by Poetry Society of America

The Anna Rabinowitz Prize is awarded to poets and their collaborators for venturesome, interdisciplinary work that was completed in the previous year and combines poetry with any other art or discipline.

Work that qualifies includes but is not limited to books that blend visual art and poetry, original performances of dance and poetry (or dance based on poetry) and of music and poetry (including libretti based on poetry), as well as more eclectic collaborations involving poetry and technology, the sciences or math.

Candidates are required to provide materials documenting their projects. These will be key to the judging process. Panels, discussions, and programs focused on dialogue between disciplines rather than the creation of a new work are not eligible.

The finished work should have been produced or published in 2024 but can involve or be based in part on work from any era. All are welcome to apply singly if the work involving more than one discipline has been accomplished alone.

Honorarium: $1,000 to be divided equally between or among the principals if not awarded to a single artist.
