JOCK’N BLUES | Unveiling Ceremony and Reception
Tuesday, May 13 :: 6-8pm
@ BLIFTD ART STVDIOS

An Evening Honoring the Legacy of George ‘Spider’ Anderson through Art and Storytelling

Unveiling Ceremony and Reception
Tuesday, May 13 | 6:00–8:00 p.m.
BLIFTD ART STVDIOS
American Can Company, Signature Building
2400 Boston St. 21224

Baltimore, MD — BLIFTD ART STVDIOS proudly presents JOCK’N BLUES, an unveiling ceremony and reception spotlighting a new work by acclaimed Baltimore-based artist Jeffrey Kent. The event will take place on Tuesday, May 13, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at BLIFTD ART STVDIOS.

FREE RSVP (appreciated, not required): https://www.eventbrite.com/e/jockn-blues-tickets-1343435665239?aff=oddtdtcreator

The centerpiece of the evening is Kent’s powerful painting, Jock’n Blues: Love Me, Love Me Not, inspired by the story of George ‘Spider’ Anderson, the first African American jockey to win the inaugural Preakness Stakes. A native Baltimorean, Anderson’s remarkable and underrecognized legacy takes center stage through Kent’s evocative, historically rich artwork.

Joining Kent in conversation is curator, real estate developer, and cultural advocate Dana Henson, whose recent art commissions in Park Heights pay tribute to Anderson and further her community-driven efforts in the neighborhood “beyond the racetracks.” Their discussion will explore the intersections of art, legacy, and place-making in Baltimore.

To further honor the heritage of the Preakness Stakes and its local significance, the evening will also feature a presentation of Let the Horses Run, a dynamic series by Michael Haskins Jr., founder of Currency Studio. Haskins’ work anchors the Visiting Artists Collection No. 2 at BLIFTD, continuing the studio’s mission to amplify Baltimore’s vibrant creative voices.

JOCK’N BLUES is free and open to the public. Attendees will enjoy art, conversation, and community as we pay homage to a hidden hero of Baltimore’s history and those who carry his story forward.

About BLIFTD ART STVDIOS:
BLIFTD ART STVDIOS is a creative hub in Baltimore committed to showcasing contemporary art that engages community, heritage, and innovation. Through exhibitions, public programs, and visiting artist collections, BLIFTD nurtures cultural dialogue and artistic excellence.

Chew-ache | Opening Reception
Friday, May 16 :: 5-8pm
@ The Compound

The Compound is proud to announce its inaugural exhibition: Chew-Ache, a visceral inquiry into the act of chewing as both instinct and insubordination. Marking the official launch of the Multidisciplinary Arts Program, Chew-Ache sets the tone for an exhibition space that is dedicated to instability, fluidity and resistance.

Curated in the spirit of friction and noise, Chew-Ache explores the act of chewing beyond its physiological function—framing it as resistance, disruption, and a site of tension within systems of consumption, production, and control. The show brings together a group of artists whose practice is a rethinking of the power dynamics behind the everyday verb ‘chewing’, liberating the word from silent submission and reclaiming the agency of ‘Chewing’. The artists in this exhibition amplify the gnaw, the crack, the splinter—unveiling chewing as a disobedient act that rattles not only the jaw, but also the social, political, and sensory systems that seek to digest us whole.

Featuring works by Simon Garb, Ben Gould, Alex Mari, Jiangshengyu Nova Pan, Olivia Reavey, and Yasser Vayani, the exhibition sprawls across painting, performance, sculpture, sound, and photography. In this exhibition, chewing is reimagined as noise, as rupture, as a site of bodily uprising. As the artists tear at the fabric of passive ingestion—whether it be food, language, history, or ideology—they leave behind a collective howl, a low-frequency vibration of resistance.

Chew-Ache is a call to all bodies: reclaim the jaw, rupture the script, grind against the grain.

COLAB: Art and Music from Baltimore and Beyond | Opening Reception
Saturday, May 17 :: 6-9pm
@ Eubie Blake Cultural Center

Welcome to the COLAB: Art and Music from Baltimore and Beyond! Join us at the Eubie Blake Cultural Center for a evening of creativity and culture. Immerse yourself in a blend of art and music from talented artists hailing from Baltimore and beyond. This in-person event is your chance to experience a diverse showcase of artistic expression. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to connect with the Baltimore art and music scene. See you there!

EXHIBITION CONCEPT:

This exhibition will showcase works on loan from important collections of African-American art and artists. The Visual Art Curator has selected pieces that span a wide range of styles, subjects and mediums, creating this digital catalog to facilitate collaboration in the curatorial process with invited musicians and producers of music in various musical genres.

Under the leadership of the Eubie Blake Cultural Center, and in collaboration with the Visual Art Curator and the Music Curator, music professionals and students of the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University will review the COLAB digital exhibition catalog. They will respond to the works of art by selecting tracks from any musical genre that resonates with specific pieces; not necessarily choosing music from their own genre. Musical collaborators will also provide brief written commentaries on their music and art pairings, which will be integrated into the exhibition’s content by the curators.

QR codes will link the selected works of art to an online playlist developed from the collaborators, offering a unique and diverse soundtrack for the exhibition. Additionally, narrated descriptions of the works, written by the Visual Art Curator, will be available for the visually impaired. Profiles on all the collaborators will also be a part of the exhibition content.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own Bluetooth listening devices or borrow our POLK AUDIO headphones to fully experience exhibition’s soundtrack and the works of art.

The intention of the exhibition is to foster a collaborative, interdisciplinary, art exhibition that engages the audience in the process of interpreting visual art through music.

Inspiration Sessions
Offered by Very Well

Inspiration Sessions are a FREE, 90-minute offering for Baltimore-based artists—writers, musicians, fashion designers, performers, photographers, visual artists, and more. Built around our Modern Sound Bath Deep Dive, these sessions are designed to help artists reconnect with their creative process, move through blocks, and find flow.

We’re offering these free sessions to artists because we believe they are essential to the health of our wider culture and community. In challenging times, we look to artists to reflect where we are—and to help us imagine the better places we could go. Their work shapes how we think, feel, and connect. They provide joy and meaning.

They inspire us all.

But they need inspiration, too. These sessions are our way of helping them access the states of mind that allow inspiration to return—so they can keep doing the work that moves us all forward.

If you’re an artist, we hope you’ll sign up.

If you know one, please send them our way.

And if you’re not an artist but this sounds like exactly what you need—you can book a Deep Dive for yourself anytime. The experience is the same. The outcome is yours to define!

Resonance – Virtual Exhibition & Print Catalogue
deadline June 1
posted by Visionary Art Collective

We are excited to announce an open call for Resonance, our upcoming virtual exhibition and print catalog that explores the deep, often unspoken ways art connects us to something beyond ourselves.

The word resonance comes from the Latin resonare, meaning “to re-sound” or “to sound together.” In music, it describes the reverberation of tones. In physics, it refers to the amplification of energy. In life—and in art—resonance is the stirring of emotion, memory, and meaning. It is the unseen echo that lingers long after the initial encounter.

We invite artists of all career levels to submit work that explores this theme—whether through visual metaphors, emotional tone, or the literal or abstract interplay of form, light, and space. What does it mean for something to stay with us, to echo inwardly, to feel undeniably personal and alive?

Selected works will be featured in a virtual exhibition on the Warnes Contemporary website this summer, with all accepted work available for sale on the gallery’s website. In addition to the exhibition, selected artists will be featured on Warnes Contemporary and Visionary Art Collective social media pages and included in a beautifully designed print catalog. The accompanying catalog will be available online and at Warnes Contemporary, our brick-and-mortar gallery in Brooklyn, NY.

Eligibility: This international opportunity is open to artists of all experience levels. Work must be available for sale.

We accept all 2D & 3D mediums, including painting, drawing, photography, digital, prints, fiber art, collage, mixed media, sculpture, ceramics, and installation art. Film and video are not accepted at this time. We don’t have specific size requirements for this exhibition.

This exhibition will be curated by Victoria J. Fry, a New York City-based painter, educator, curator, and podcast host. She is the founder of Visionary Art Collective, New Visionary Magazine, and Warnes Contemporary. Fry has supported hundreds of artists globally, providing resources and opportunities to help them further their art careers. As part of her mission to increase visibility for emerging artists, Fry partners with renowned curators and gallerists to present both in-person and virtual exhibitions at Warnes Contemporary and beyond, as well as to publish quarterly issues of New Visionary Magazine, a contemporary art publication showcasing artists from around the world. Fry has been a guest speaker for the Women’s Caucus for Art in Washington, D.C., Superfine Art Fair in NYC, Photo Trouvée Magazine, The Art Queens Society, and the Huron River Art Collective. She has curated exhibitions for organizations such as Create! Magazine, Arts to Hearts Project, and The Artful Collective, and has served as a juror for the Women’s United Art Prize. Fry holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts (2012) and an MAT from the Maine College of Art (2014).
