Baltimore People, Places, and Things: A Retrospective | Opening Reception
Wednesday, January 7 :: 5-7pm
@ Lord Baltimore Hotel
Join Baltimore-based photographer Albert Ewing as he kicks off the new year with a compelling retrospective as part of the Lord Baltimore Hotel’s Good Taste art exhibition series. Ewing’s show, titled “Baltimore People, Places, and Things: A Retrospective,” is a visual journey through more than two decades of life in Charm City, capturing the faces, streetscapes and soul of the region through his signature candid and storytelling style.
Shot over 20+ years during countless walks with his camera and a trusted lens or two, this body of work offers an intimate look at the people Ewing has encountered and the conversations that shaped the moment. From portraits and street scenes to quiet observations of everyday life, Ewing’s photos reflect the rhythm, resilience and richness of Baltimore’s communities.
About the Artist:
Albert Ewing is a Baltimore-based professional photographer with over 30 years of experience focused on people interactions, storytelling and relaxed candid portraiture. Ewing first studied video production before transitioning to still photography in 1988. He launched his career as a commercial photographer’s assistant before becoming a full-time self-employed photographer, capturing everything from weddings and portraits to architecture and journalism. His true passion lies in documenting the spirit of the city he calls home through personal projects rooted in authenticity and connection.

Thursday, January 8 :: 6-8:30pm
@ Baltimore Museum of Art

Friday, January 9 | Ongoing through February 1
@ Vagabond Players
By Ian Shaw & Joseph Nixon
Directed by Stephen Deininger
As the film celebrates its 50th anniversary, dive deep into the behind-the-scenes drama, humor, and humanity that unfolded during the making of Jaws. Centered on the tense, often hilarious dynamic between actors Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider, the play offers a revealing look at the real-life personalities behind the iconic characters of Quint, Hooper, and Brody. Set almost entirely aboard the stranded Orca during filming delays, it explores ego clashes, artistic frustration, and unexpected camaraderie—echoing the larger themes of fear, fame, and legacy that Jaws so powerfully captured. Both a love letter to a cinematic legend and a sharp reflection on what it means to create under pressure, THE SHARK IS BROKEN is a timely tribute that deepens our understanding of a film that changed Hollywood forever.

Gulnur Tuluoglu: Sacrifice Of Home | Opening Reception
Friday, January 9 | 5-7pm
@ Gallery CA
Gallery CA presents Sacrifice of Home, the upcoming solo exhibition by Gulnur Tuluoglu, on view from January 9th through February 7th, 2026. In this body of work, which includes paintings and mixed media, Tuluoglu addresses the complexity of being a second-generation immigrant. By referencing family photos, while also creating a world of her own symbols, she speaks to the preservation and reinterpretation of tradition.
At the center of the exhibition is the recurring image of the lamb sacrifice (‘Kurban’ in Turkish), drawn from the Abraham/Isaac narrative. In the story, Abraham is asked to sacrifice his son as a test of faith, and at the final moment, a sheep is offered in the child’s place. Tuluoglu revisits this narrative by depicting members of her own family during Eid al-Adha, the celebration rooted in that story. Here, the lamb becomes a symbol for more than the ritual itself. The bold paintings invite the viewer to consider when sacrifice may be driven not by faith, but by fear, and what the consequences of that might be.
Although these scenes depict moments usually understood as communal or celebratory, the work carries an undertone of dissonance. They speak to the isolation that arises when rituals are lived from afar, and the sacrifices of leaving one home for another.

Untethered Familiars: Annual Resident Artist Exhibition
Friday, January 9 | 6-9pm
@ Creative Alliance
On View: January 9, 2026 – February 14, 2026
Opening Reception: January 9, 2026, 6 – 9 pm
Open Studios and Resident Artist Information Session: February 6, 2026 6 – 8:30 pm
There’s a kind of magic that happens when artists share space—not just studio space, but the in-between spaces too. The hallways. The laundry room. The moments when you’re carrying your materials and catch a glimpse of someone else’s process through an open door.
Our seven resident artists—Edgar Reyes, Nicoletta Darita de la Brown, Bria Sterling-Wilson, Ayana Gordon, Candice Tavares, Jasmine Adams, and Ajee Hassan—are untethered in the most important sense: free to follow their individual practices wherever they need to go. Yet they’re also familiars to one another, companions in this strange and electric experiment of living and making under one roof. They see each other. They inspire each other, sometimes without even realizing it. Creative osmosis is real, and it’s happening here.
The familiar is what we know intimately—our materials, our rituals, the questions we return to again and again. But familiars are also something wilder: creatures with their own agency, guardians with their own wisdom. These artists work with that tension every day. They’re deeply individual, each asking hard questions about the work they want to put forth into the world, yet they’re shaped by proximity and care, by the thoughtful and meaningful disruptions that come from being in community.
Untethered Familiars is about that beautiful contradiction: the rebellious spirit of independent practice meeting the loveliness of shared inspiration. It’s about artists who are sovereign in their making yet connected by something more esoteric—the accumulated energy of people committed to their craft, to each other, to empathetic disruption and gorgeous risk-taking.
This program is a privilege. This group of artists is a gift. What they’re making here—both individually and in constellation—is electric.

“Tea is the elixir of life.” ~ Lao Tzu
Whether as a morning inspiration for the day, or a warm moment at the end of one, tea is always comforting. Tea carries a rich history, spanning thousands of years and is a part of many cultures. The beverage may be an individual indulgence or shared with a neighbor on a hot summer day. A cup of tea sets the stage for conversation or for ceremony. This call for art welcomes creative minds to contemplate the tastes, smells, traditions, and emotions in various media. We encourage artists to expand on the theme of tea in representational and abstract forms that may include tea vessels, depictions of tea/tea traditions, artwork made with tea, or the sense of warmth, belonging, and so much more.
Artwork may be of any style and medium and may invite the viewer to actually touch the artwork.
Artists from within the DMV region and beyond are encouraged to apply.
The room is set, your spot awaits at Strathmore’s Teatime Juried Exhibition.

KaleidoHOPE
deadline January 30
posted by Kennedy Kreeger Institute
Kennedy Krieger Institute invites artists to contribute to its new KaleidoHOPE Healing Art Initiative, a transformative campaign to bring healing, comfort, and inspiration to the patients, students, families, and staff of Kennedy Krieger Institute.
The initiative’s committee welcomes artwork in a variety of mediums, including but not limited to painting, photography, mixed media, sculpture, textile art, murals and fiber. Donated art should be appropriate for a pediatric healthcare and educational setting. Preferred themes include hope, healing, nature, and art that incorporates children.
The unifying theme: Butterflies. “Butterflies often symbolize transformation, optimism, and HOPE. A group of butterflies is called a Kaleidoscope,” said Deeannah Taylor, lead organizer of this exciting initiative. “The two words combined give us KaleidoHOPE.”
“The name really encapsulates what we are trying to achieve. Just as the butterfly emerges stronger and more vibrant, patients too can emerge from Kennedy Krieger’s care with renewed strength and HOPE,” said Elisa Delia, vice president and chief of staff and strategic initiatives. “The artwork will create a transformative experience.”
A generous donation from a community supporter will fund the cost of installing the art, and an opening reception will be held to recognize KaleidoHOPE’s artists once installation is complete.
