Bringing UnSexy Back

The Janet and Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize 2014 Semifinalists Exhibition @ MICA

The Janet and Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize 2014 Semifinalists Exhibition opened Thursday July 17 in the Decker, Meyerhoff, and Pinkard galleries of MICA, This years judges were Claire Gilman, Sarah Oppenheimer, and Olivia Shao. The Semifinalists Exhibition curator is BOPA’s Public Art Coordinator, Kim Domanski.

The exhibition continues to serve as Baltimore’s only annual survey of ‘Best Of” regional artists chosen by outside curators. This year’s exhibition is expansive and particularly elegant. Three galleries full of excellent work is on display. Curator Kim Domanski selects this work from the semi-finalists submissions collaboratively with the artists. She then works with a team of art installers who place and hang the exhibition under her watchful eye. With this exhibition Domanski has once again proven herself as one of the best curators in the region. While many of the artists are well known in Baltimore, the exhibition remains full of surprises and wonderful juxtapositions. The work ranges from a few that are large and bombastic to many that are small, intimate, and contemplative. – Jack Livingston
