BmoreArt is excited to announce a new collaboration with the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) that offers a rare, close-up look at the artists who keep Maryland’s cultural traditions alive.
Over the coming months, we will release a series of documentaries produced by Wide Angle Youth Media, whose video production team has spent time with artists participating in MSAC’s Maryland Traditions program through the Folklife Apprenticeship grant, which pairs mentoring traditional artists with dedicated apprentices to pass down skills, stories, and practices that might otherwise be lost; and the Maryland Heritage Award, recognizing long-term practice in the traditional arts.
These short films, which have also been screened at regional film festivals, capture the artistry, discipline, and cultural significance behind each tradition. As BmoreArt releases the series, we’ll accompany the films with additional commentary and interviews with the featured artists, giving readers a deeper window into their creative processes and the personal impact of MSAC support.
This is more than a chance to watch beautiful short films — it’s an invitation to reflect on what these grants make possible: the growth of individual artists, the survival of cultural traditions, and the vital role that public arts funding plays in sustaining Maryland’s creative communities.
