Bill Arning
Bill Arning is widely recognized for organizing early exhibitions of artists who have since received major museum retrospectives, including Lisa Yuskavage, Sean Landers, Marilyn Minter, Lorna Simpson, Glenn Ligon, Cady Noland, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Petah Coyne, Andres Serrano, Gary Simmons, Mary Weatherford, John Currin, and Jim Hodges. Over the course of his career, Arning has developed a reputation for identifying and championing artists whose work would go on to shape contemporary art discourse.
He is also an accomplished writer, critic, and cultural essayist, with publications in leading art journals and periodicals, as well as numerous museum catalogues and institutional publications.
Arning founded Bill Arning Exhibitions (BAE) in 2019 following a four-decade career in nonprofit arts institutions, including the MIT List Visual Arts Center in Cambridge, White Columns in New York, and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. Originally conceived as a nomadic curatorial platform presenting exhibitions internationally across galleries, museums, and alternative spaces, BAE evolved in response to the travel restrictions of 2020, establishing a physical space in Houston before relocating to the Hudson Valley in 2023.
Today, BAE operates as a flexible exhibition model, producing pop-ups in New York City and the Hudson Valley while presenting artists at major art fairs and continuing Arning’s long-standing commitment to the artists he has championed throughout his career.
