Laura Payne: Talk to Strangers School 33
September 7 – October 27, 2012
Celebrity worship breeds unreciprocated affection between the famous and their followers. Late night talk shows offer audiences a supposedly candid view of film and television stars, who convey the impression of intimacy imparted by personal anecdotes. Though predetermined topics and boundaries are established between host and guest, the staged dialogue plays out like a private confession, blurring the line between performance and authenticity. Emotionally pivotal moments caused by surprising questions or sensitive topics, whether contrived or sincere, are at the crux of the voyeuristic appeal of celebrity talk shows.
Laura Payne is currently a MFA candidate in MICA’s Mt. Royal School of Art.
